Luis del Olmo comments on his state of health after the accident he suffered last Saturday: "We have to last until we are 120 years old"

Luis del Olmo is one of the most recognized and awarded figures in Spanish radio broadcasting. One of the greatest longevity records that he maintains behind him was the one he amassed with the legendary Protagonistas, which was broadcast on up to 4 different networks: RNE, Onda Cero, COPE and Punto Radio. From 1973 to December 2013, the Ponferrada native presented a total of 11,600 editions, making it the longest-running program in the history of radio in Spain.

However, not everything has gone smoothly lately for the announcer, who was due to go to Madrid last Saturday to receive one of the Antena de Oro awards. “Luis del Olmo, one of the greats of radio, is missing. This morning, at 7:15, my phone rang and it was Merche, the wife, telling me that she had fallen in the bathtub and broken her ankle or foot, I wasn't very clear, and that she was running to the hospital," commented Juan Ignacio Ocaña, host of the gala.

Five days after that spectacular domestic accident, del Olmo has reappeared before the media, after a group of reporters from Europa Press asked him to update his state of health. The presenter claims to be fine, after having even spoken with Espejo Público and told how everything happened. Furthermore, he joked with reporters insisting that he should last for many more years.

“I'm pretty good, pretty much better. We still have to last until we are 120 years old,” she explained. Similarly, del Olmo also warned Europa Press colleagues to be very careful when entering and leaving the bathroom, especially bathtubs. “To all the friends who are watching us, be careful because the bathtubs are very treacherous,” he said, even inciting the public who could see or read these statements soon.

“I go to the shower, like every day, and when I get out, I slip, I don't know how. When I realize she was already on the ground. I tried to get up and couldn't. I called my wife, who came, and I called a friend who lives here with us, and they couldn't either. We called the doorman, who is very nice, about 25 years old, and he put me up. I'm a freak. I really want to go out and run around here. The doctors have told me not to worry and that I still have life left for at least a couple of years,” she said with Susanna Griso.

Beyond this spectacular incident, Luis del Olmo was extremely grateful for having received a Golden Antenna at the gala held at the Gran Casino of Aranjuez. One of his colleagues who was there that night, Iñaki Gabilondo, was in charge of insisting to those present on his behalf: “He called us all 30 times this morning to tell us to say on his behalf that he is very grateful.”
