Glitter is prohibited: eco-friendly options for sparkling makeup

The days of makeup made popular by Euphoria are over. The European Union announced last week that as of October 17, 2023, the sale of glitter or products containing microplastics less than five millimeters will be prohibited. The era of bright facials and glitter makeup ends for the planet, however, the industry has already found a solution.

For some time now, fashion and makeup brands have begun to market ecological alternatives to shine at festivals and similar events. This is the case of companies like Primark, who already in 2019 began selling glitter for makeup produced from unrefined materials derived from eucalyptus.

In Amazon's infinite showcase the options to obtain this sustainable product are expanded to supply all tastes. In large, small grains, gel or powder, dyed in a wide range of colors including even the fluorescent finish.

In this vast and brilliant universe, brands such as Hemway, made from ecological films derived from sustainable natural resources, Moon Glitter, made in the United Kingdom with eucalyptus cellulose sheets, and Glitzy Gurl, made in Germany, stand out above the rest. Plastic and not tested on animals.

Beyond the large firms, there are local brands that seek to differentiate themselves from the rest by betting completely on this product. Specializing in biodegradable glitter, Marguli was born in Gran Canaria with "the intention of raising awareness about the consumption and excessive use of plastic, and showing alternatives to it." Its star product is biodegradable glitter made by hand with raw materials such as seaweed and natural mineral pigments.
