This is Xiaomi's first electric car: a sports design sedan to compete with Tesla

The technology company Xiaomi, one of the world leaders in the production of mobile phones and electric scooters, is also willing to position itself as a reference manufacturer in the field of electric cars. The Chinese company has been finalizing the details of the Xiaomi SU7 for some time, a car that it is developing in three versions, with the intention of becoming an alternative to more established brands in the market, such as Tesla.

Although neither the price nor the range of its first electric vehicle has yet been revealed, Xiaomi aims to compete with Elon Musk's company by providing a car with high-quality finishes at an affordable price.

The first images of the SU7 have been revealed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China. This organization has subjected the technology giant's car to the homologation process as a preliminary step for the commercialization of the vehicle. Xiaomi already announced a long time ago its intention to put the three versions of the car on sale, SU7, SU7 Pro and SU7 Max, throughout 2024, although the last of the three models, the most powerful and with the sportiest design, It has not been revealed whether it has been presented to the state regulator.

Until the release of the images of the Xiaomi SU7 on the Chinese Government website, the information available was very limited, making it difficult to get a clear view of the vehicle's features. One of the main unknowns lay in its classification within the appropriate segment, since the few leaked images did not provide a solid basis to determine it.

Now it can be categorically stated that it is a sedan, and not an SUV, with four doors and a sporty design that, in turn, conveys a feeling of elegance and quality. This is precisely a hallmark that Chinese companies have appropriated to compete with brands with greater roots in the international market.

The manufacturing of the SU7 is carried out by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co (BAIC), a government company that follows Xiaomi's instructions regarding the design and features of the car.

The Xiaomi SU7 certification report made public by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reveals some data about the vehicle that the manufacturing company still keeps silent.

The car measures 4.99 meters long, 1.96 meters wide and 1.4 meters high. The weight is approximately 1,980 kilograms and it is equipped with an engine of 220 or 275 kW of power depending on the version. The maximum speed (electronically limited) of the SU7 is 210 km/h.

It has also emerged that Xiaomi's first electric car will be equipped with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. and BYD Co. batteries, depending on the engine. However, as far as autonomy is concerned, it is still unknown how many kilometers the SU7 will be able to travel on a single charge. The latest information, which has not been confirmed, speaks of a 100 kWh battery and a real range of about 700 kilometers.

As for the price, it is rumored that Xiaomi's first electric car could cost around 40,000 euros, an amount in line with other similar models manufactured by other Chinese companies.
