These are the best-selling electric cars in Spain: there is an undisputed leader

The Tesla Model Y has been the best-selling electric car in the Spanish market in the month of September. According to data prepared by Ideauto for the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (Anfac), Elon Musk's brand has registered a total of 652 registrations of this vehicle in our country, which represents an interannual growth of 93.5%. . The commercial podium of the month is completed, in second place, with the Fiat 500e with 274 units (-16.7%) and, third, the Audi Q4, with 199 units (323.4%). It is followed by the MG4, with 198 units (1,550%), and the Dacia Spring, with 177 vehicles (31.1%).

Regarding the electric models that are registering the most registrations during the first nine months of the year, it is worth noting that the Tesla Model Y unquestionably leads the classification, with a total of 4,975 units (418.8% more than in the same period of 2022) and a market share of 14.4%. Unlike what happened in the 'top 5' in September, the Model 3 is in second place, with 3,011 units and a growth of 30%. The third step on the podium is occupied by the MG4, with 2,437 units (20,208%).

At this point it is fair to comment that MG is a Chinese brand that is making a strong impact in our country. In fact, its ZS model has been the best-selling car in Spain in the months of August and September. This car has prevailed over other alternatives from very consolidated brands, as well as one of the low-cost models that until now has been at the top of the commercial table: the Dacia Sandero, a model that was the best-selling in 2020 , came third in the 2021 ranking and was second in 2022.

The firm of Romanian origin and belonging to the Renault group since 1999 has a 100% electric product that appears in the top 5 of the best-selling cars of this type in Spain during the first nine months of the year. This is the Dacia Spring, ranked fifth, behind the Fiat 500e (1,598 units; 18.1%), with 1,477 registered examples (96.2%).

In Spain, the take-off of electric cars is still not quite taking off. The high price of this type of vehicle (despite the aid from the Moves III plan that is then taxed as personal income tax income), its autonomy (in many cases still contained) and the scarcity of charging points represent a significant brake.

“Spain is moving towards electrification, but not at the necessary pace to meet the required objectives,” stated José López-Tafall, general director of ANFAC, which publishes an Electromobility Barometer every three months. In the last report, this was evident.

In the second quarter of 2023, the global electromobility indicator for Spain (which assesses the penetration of electrified vehicles and the installation of publicly accessible charging infrastructure with respect to the 2030 objective according to the Fit for 55 package of measures) increased by point, obtaining a total rating of 12 points out of 100. On the other hand, the European average is already at 25 points, with an improvement in the indicator of 1.5 points in the second quarter, which widens the gap between Spain and the continent.
