The radar of the longest section of Madrid begins to fine: up to 600 euros and 6 points on the license

The section radar installed on Sinesio Delgado Street in Madrid, the longest in the capital and which limits speed to 50 kilometers per hour, begins to issue fines starting today. After a four-month notice period, starting this Monday, drivers who exceed the permitted speed will be fined, according to the Road Safety Law, with serious or very serious penalties ranging between 100 and 600 euros and a loss between 2 and 6 points on your driving license.

The Sinesio Delgado radar is unique, since it is the only one that incorporates intermediate speed controls designed to record vehicles entering through access roads. In addition, it has a multipoint design, characterized by the presence of six speed detection devices installed in both directions of the street. These radars cover an area of 1,739 meters in the direction of Ciudad Universitaria and 1,800 meters in the direction of Paseo de la Castellana.

In the University City direction, the first device is located a few meters from the Piedrafita de Cebrero roundabout and the last is located shortly before the intersection with Miraflores Avenue. The intermediate control point is located at the intersection with Valdeverdeja Street.

In the Castellana direction, the beginning is after the intersection of Sinesio Delgado with Miraflores Avenue and the end is before reaching the Piedrafita de Cebrero roundabout. The intermediate control point has been installed at the intersection of Sinesio Delgado with Doroteo Benache Street.

The acquisition and commissioning of these six radars has involved a disbursement of 95,000 euros, of which 80,000 have been financed by the European Union with Next Generation EU funds.

The Sinesio Delgado radar has operated in the warning period from September 15, 2023 until midnight on January 14, 2024. During this period, drivers who exceeded the established speed were not fined. The City Council chose to notify the offenders through letters about the offense committed without entailing the payment of the corresponding fine, with the aim of raising awareness among drivers about the importance of promoting safer driving in said area.

During the four months that the section radar operated during the warning period, the number of violations committed and notified has been reduced by 66.7%, which has dropped from the 843 registered between September 15 and 30 to 281 in December.

The Madrid City Council explains in a note that the objective of the radar is to "reduce the speed on the controlled route to reduce accidents and guarantee the safety of citizens." According to the City Council, it responds to “a neighborhood demand submitted to the Moncloa-Aravaca District Board.” The characteristics of the road, with two lanes in each direction and a median separation, caused many drivers to greatly exceed the 50 km/h limit during the hours of lower traffic volume.

The section radar installed in Sinesio Delgado is the third device of its kind in the city of Madrid. The cinemamometer is added to those existing on the A-5, two-way and with a length of 1,735 meters, and the one on Avenida de Córdoba, exclusively in the exit direction, of 1,026 meters.

The maximum speed at which you can drive on Sinesio Delgado Street is limited to 50 kilometers per hour, so drivers who do so above 100 km/h can be punished with a fine of 600 euros and the loss of 6 points on the license.
