More visits to the workshop in July: these elements of the car are the least tolerant of heat

In summer, high temperatures can affect the operation of some vehicle components. So much so that the Norauto workshop network has reported that during this month of July, which has been one of the hottest, there has been an increase of more than 30% in the number of visits due to breakdowns compared to the same period last year. last year. According to the company, the high records of thermometers -among other reasons- have been the cause of this increase.

Therefore, to the periodic inspections that are scheduled for these dates are added unexpected breakdowns due to extreme heat, explains Víctor Pardo, Market Manager and Proyectos Taller de Norauto, who points out that "these problems must be solved as soon as possible , since in many cases they occur on holidays”.

In order to avoid unpleasant surprises, it is advisable to carry out a review of the condition of the car, especially if it will be used to make summer trips. There is no doubt that nobody would like to suffer a breakdown halfway to the longed-for vacation destination. Staying stranded on the road waiting for the tow truck in the heat of the day, with the car well loaded and small children crying, is an experience not to be forgotten.

As not all parts of the vehicle suffer from high temperatures equally, Norauto has made a compilation of those that present the most problems for this reason.

The battery is very sensitive to sudden changes in temperature, as the acid inside dries more easily. If, in addition, it is at the end of its useful life, there is a greater chance that it will break down. From Norauto they point out that in most cases you have to change this component.

The alternator is also one of the parts whose operation is directly affected by high temperatures. "In fact, it is one of the elements that generates the most visits to the workshop," emphasize sources from Norauto.

Another element that must be watched with special attention is the coolant. This must work correctly to avoid overheating in the engine, which would result in a serious breakdown.

The tires are the only component of the car that is in direct contact with the asphalt. When the heat is severe and the pavement heats up, it can increase the risk of suffering a blowout or puncture. Also, premature wear can occur.

In addition to the aforementioned elements, it should be noted that the upholstery, the dashboard, the brushes, the optics, the rubbers or the joints are also damaged by extremely high temperatures.

The average age of the Spanish car park is almost 14 years old and this is an important factor during heat waves. Older cars have a higher probability of breaking down due to high temperatures and, therefore, more options to go through the workshop than newer vehicles.

“The materials of these cars have suffered wear over time. In addition, they incorporate older technologies that also make it difficult for them to withstand the high temperatures that are being recorded,” explains Pardo.

As far as electric cars are concerned, from Norauto they indicate that in principle they should not suffer more than a combustion car. However, it is true that batteries are very sensitive to high temperatures, and electric vehicles can be affected as well.

After knowing the parts that are most sensitive to heat, a series of tips can be followed to reduce the chances of damage to the car. Norauto recommends parking the vehicle preferably in closed places. such as garages. Likewise, avoid doing it in the street as far as possible, especially in the hottest hours and in warnings of heat waves.

It is also advisable to protect the interior as much as possible with seat covers, placing a sun visor or blinds. One option is to cover the vehicle with an outdoor cover. In addition, it is advisable to use the vehicle frequently and not leave it parked for long periods of time. It goes without saying that it is very important to check the vehicle regularly to detect the first signs and avoid major breakdowns.
