Elon Musk downgrades Tesla's best-seller and now it costs you less than the Chinese MG Marvel R SUV

One of the problems for the expansion of electric cars is their price, higher than what an equivalent gasoline car would cost. Hence, to make them more accessible, some countries offer aid for their acquisition (in Spain we have the Moves III plan). Aware of this handicap, Tesla not only plans to launch a cheap car on the market (25,000 euros) but is lowering the prices of some versions of its current models. Elon Musk's company already applied it previously with the Model 3 and now it does it again with the best-selling Model Y, which in our country now costs from 42,900 euros, that is, about 7,000 euros less than the price of the Chinese SUV MG Marvel R Electric.

The Model Y is the best-selling electric car in the world. In Spain, the entry variant to the range cost 46,490 euros, 3,500 euros more than now. The brand assures that if we discount the maximum aid from the Moves III plan, the price is reduced to 35,760 euros. For this outlay you can enjoy the rear-wheel drive version, equipped with a 220 kW (299 HP) engine, capable of reaching 217 km/h and accelerating from zero to one hundred in 6.9 seconds. Its 60 kWh useful capacity battery offers a range of 455 kilometers.

Although the Marvel R Electric can be purchased from 41,980 euros (without discounting aid), the version with a power similar to that of the Tesla has an official rate of 49,980 euros (without applying discounts). This amount is the amount that must be paid for the variant equipped with a 212 kW (288 HP) engine, all-wheel drive and a range of 370 kilometers. The new price of the Model Y places it well ahead of its most direct rivals, such as the Audi Q4 e-tron, the Ford Mustang Mach E or the Mercedes EQC. In fact, even the Nissan Ariya is more expensive.

Elon Musk's firm explains that to drive the global transition towards more sustainable energy, one of its priorities in 2024 is to make Tesla vehicles accessible to a broader public. To achieve this, they work on optimizing their engineering and production processes, which helps them operate more efficiently both in time and costs. “These improvements in efficiency allow us to offer high-quality products at lower prices,” the brand says.

According to its data, in 2023, Elon Musk's firm increased production by 35% to 1.85 million units. Regarding registrations, it delivered a total of 1.81 million vehicles, which represented an increase of 38% compared to the previous year.

The Model Y became the most popular car in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. It was also the best-selling electric vehicle in countries such as Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Croatia, Denmark, Slovenia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Luxembourg, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland.

In the absence of official registration data, it is very likely that this Tesla electric SUV will be crowned the best-selling car in Europe in 2023. For now, preliminary data collected by the consulting firm Jato Dynamic indicate that it was the best-selling car of the world last year. In the absence of scrutinizing “a small number of markets” that a priori will not dislodge it from its position, it can be said that it has become the first electric car to achieve global leadership, ahead of models with internal combustion engines. .
