Catalonia leads the fall in unemployment in September

September was a good month for employment in Catalonia. Unemployment fell, more than in any other autonomy, and Social Security affiliation increased.

On the unemployment side, 3,440 fewer unemployed people were registered, up to a total of 335,432. In absolute terms, the community was the one that registered the greatest decrease in unemployment. At the national level, unemployment grew by 19,768 people, especially due to the increase in Andalusia. Catalonia is among those that reduce it, followed by the 2,831 fewer unemployed in the Canary Islands or the 1,933 in the Basque Country.

Most of the reduction in unemployment comes from Barcelona, where 3,537 fewer unemployed people are registered. In Girona and Lleida there are a dozen fewer, while it grows in Tarragona, with 118 more unemployed in September. The reduction in unemployment comes from the services sector, where unemployment falls by 3,374 people. In any case, of the 335,432 unemployed in Catalonia, up to 242,253 are from this sector, the vast majority, compared to 37,018 from the industry.

"Unemployment breaks the usual trend and falls in September, a month in which it usually rises. This decrease comes from the reduction in female unemployment, one of the most vulnerable groups and on which the Government focuses its employment policies," Roger Torrent, Minister of Business and Labor, highlighted. Treball points to hiring linked to the start of the school year and a "deseasonalization" of tourism, with a prolonged season due to high temperatures and new travel habits, as key factors in the data.

On the job creation side, in September there were almost 10,000 new jobs with 9,394 more average affiliates. The trend is repeated and Barcelona leads the figures, with 35,060 jobs, while in the rest of the provinces jobs are lost: from Girona (-14,081 affiliates) to Lleida (-6,249) and Tarragona (-5,337).

Only Madrid, with almost 48,000 new members, and the Canary Islands, with 9,956, improve the Catalan data.
