77% of cyclists in Spain feel afraid when riding on the road

The vast majority of Spaniards (89%) fear the risky behavior carried out by other users on sidewalks and roads, according to the results of the third edition of the 'Share the road' study, published by the Vinci Autoroutes Foundation.

Conducted by IPSOS on a sample of 12,400 people from ten European countries, the research analyzes the behavior of European citizens when faced with the coexistence of different modes of transport.

According to the different groups of users, the report indicates that 93% of pedestrians distrust that car drivers do not stop at pedestrian crossings to let them pass. Furthermore, 88% of car drivers, 76% of motorcyclists and 77% of cyclists are afraid of aggression on the roads.

On the other hand, the results of the study reflect that sidewalks are often occupied by cyclists (69%) and motorcyclists (28%), constituting a danger for pedestrians, of which 70% claim to have been grazed by a bicycle or scooter when walking on a sidewalk. Additionally, 45% of cyclists say they have parked on a sidewalk.

In relation to the invasion of bike lanes, the research maintains that it also poses a risk, since 18% of car drivers and 43% of motorcyclists acknowledge using them improperly to stop or park. Likewise, 30% of drivers indicate that they have opened the car door without checking to see if a cyclist was arriving.

For their part, 71% of Spanish pedestrians admit that they do not obey the red traffic light to cross a zebra crossing and 85% admit that they sometimes cross outside any protected crossing. Likewise, 62% of car drivers and 49% of cyclists have passed when the light was amber or even red.

Finally, for their daily trips, Spaniards are the European citizens who walk the most (78%) compared to Belgians (50%). 17% of car drivers have parked in a space reserved for people with disabilities and another 15% in those reserved for electric cars.
