Work begins to renew the pedestrian walkway of the A-2 on Brussels Avenue

The Madrid City Council begins this Monday the replacement of the pedestrian walkway on the A-2 at the height of Brussels Avenue, with works that will cut off access to Corazón de María street for two months through exit 3 from the road. of service of the A-2 in the direction of entry to Madrid.

The walkway presents "significant corrosion and shows serious accessibility problems", which is why it will be replaced with a new one, the City Council reported yesterday in a press release in which it states that the project has a budget of 3.5 million of euros.

The structural solution chosen for the new pedestrian walkway will be an open box beam inside which the pedestrian will walk away from traffic, with a width of 2.20 meters and a protection of 1.40 meters high, the note says.

The disassembly and removal of the old walkway and the assembly of the new structure in sections will take place in summer and will involve cuts to the A-2 at night to minimize the effects, the note says.

The work, which will be carried out by the Works and Equipment Area, will begin with the diversions of the services affected by the implementation of the new structure (water, electricity, lighting or fiber optics), work that will last approximately two months, and the execution of the foundations, abutments and piers of the new walkway, which will last between three and four months. Alternatives to enter Corazón de María from the M-30.

In anticipation of the effects on mobility in the area, the City Council recommends the following alternative routes to access Corazón de María street from the M-30:

From the north of the A-2: exit 4 through Ramón y Cajal and Alfonso XIII streets.

From the south of the A-2: exit 6A (southbound M-30) through the avenues of Brasilia, Guindalera and Camilo José Cela; and exit 5B (northbound M-30) through Salvador de Madariaga street and Badajoz, Brasilia, Guindalera and Camilo José Cela avenues.

The implementation phase of the new footbridge in sections and the dismantling and removal of the old one will take place in summer and will involve cuts to the A-2 at night to minimize the impact on traffic.

The City Council explains that the work has been planned so that the old walkway is in service for the maximum amount of time before the new one is operational, reducing to a minimum the time in which pedestrians cannot have a connection between both banks, although for this For a short period, an alternative pedestrian route will be available under the Camilo José Cela bridge.

For the entire duration of the work, until the first quarter of 2025, traffic conditions can be consulted on the municipal website.

The new walkway will have more and better distributed accesses, so that "the alternatives for pedestrians will increase and the connection between both sides of the districts of Chamartín and Salamanca will improve," explains the City Council.

In the northern area (Chamartín) there will be a ramp access in Corazón de María and another in Santa Hortensia, as well as a staircase at the confluence of both ramps that will give rise to a small elevated plaza that will enhance connectivity between the three accesses.

And in the southern area (Salamanca), there will be two ramp accesses and two stairs on Brussels Avenue, in the Avenidas park.
