Work begins to divert traffic prior to the remodeling of Sants station

The remodeling and expansion of Sants station and the redevelopment of its surroundings, a long-awaited project that was presented a year ago by the Minister of Transport, Raquel Sánchez, now in office, and the then mayor, Ada Colau, requires a step Previous: modify traffic flows in the area. The one on the mountain side will disappear because this area will be pedestrian and tree-lined. It will pass to the sea area, next to the Espanya Industrial park, which today has one road for taxis and the rest for pedestrians and will host four lanes (two in each direction, one for public transport), which will connect the Sant Antoni promenade with Numància. , Tarragona, Provença and Roma Avenue. The work to make this transfer, which depends on the City Council, has just begun and will last eight months.

The first deputy mayor, Laia Bonet, reported this Wednesday on the start of this action, assured that "it is done within the planned schedule" and recalled that, when it is finished, Adif will be able to activate the first phase of the station's renovation. , which includes the expansion of the lobbies, the opening of the sea and mountain facades and the remodeling of the Plaza de los Païs Catalans.

Bonet has expressed his desire for the railway administrator to activate his works “the sooner the better, during 2024.” A year ago it was said that this part would conclude in 2026 and the second, with the construction of a second floor at the station in which most of its commercial and tertiary activity will be concentrated, the transfer of the bus terminal and the renovation of the Joan Peiró square, in 2030.

The first part of the work that has just started consists of the adaptation of a part of the pedestrian space on the sea side from Vallespir Street to Tarragona Street to convert it into the final four-lane road. In the section of Paseo de Sant Antoni between Plaza Joan Peiró and Comtes de Bell-Lloc, the current sidewalk will be demolished. Between this last street and Tarragona, work will mainly be carried out to adapt the current space to road traffic. Finally, intervention will be carried out at the confluence with Numància, Tarragona, Provença and Avenida de Roma, rectifying the current route so that mobility is redirected towards the new configuration.

The changes, when they come into operation next spring, will affect bus stops on lines 115, H10 and V5 in this area. The taxis will maintain the Joan Peiró grill, although in the second phase of Adif's action it will become underground, just like the parking lot that is now on the station roof.
