Who is Jordi Sabater Pons, the ALS patient who has conquered the heart of Penélope Cruz

Penélope Cruz was one of the pioneering film actresses in Spain. Shielded by the direction of Pedro Almodóvar and eventually accompanied by Javier Bardem, the native of Alcobendas managed to become the first national actress to be nominated and then win an Oscar, thanks to her efforts in the films Volver and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, by Woody Allen, respectively. An effort that also makes her emotional.

To present her latest work, the film based on real events Ferrari, Cruz has been the first guest of the week at El Hormiguero with Pablo Motos. There she has been able to talk at length about Michael Mann's attention to detail, the harshness of the scenes shared with Alan Driver, her self-demand in front of the cameras and her obsession with characters like Donatella Versace. However, the interpreter has also been able to talk about her experience meeting someone who has stolen her heart.

Cruz spoke about his charitable work in recent years, including the making of a documentary about childhood leukemia. Her latest initiative was to meet Jordi Sabaté Pons, a man suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) admitted to the Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona and who intends to start a solidarity podcast with her as the first guest. Beyond this proposal, Pons is already a well-known figure on social networks.

His YouTube channel has 61,500 subscribers who have watched more than 400 videos created from a bed, without mobility and without even the possibility of opening his mouth. He uses a writing tool converted into spoken dialogue and comments on what his life is like in such limited conditions. In his last publication he celebrates having turned 40 despite being terminally ill. His situation is complicated, as he admitted a few months ago.

In a video published during the month of September, Pons confessed that he would be “forced to request euthanasia” if he did not find help to cover the costs of his treatment. So far five people from his family and close circles had been able to cover the expenses, but after the last of them left her job the situation became critical. A harsh reality that a large part of the patients with this disease experience, as Juan Carlos Unzué confessed.

Despite this, Pons wanted to surprise Penelope during her visit on Pablo Motos' program, recording a video: “I want to say a huge thank you to Penelope Cruz for everything you are doing in the fight against ALS. What you are doing for ALS patients, thousands of people, we will be eternally grateful. Thank you for your existence. I love you very much, friend, and live life.”
