What do 'Chicken teriyaki' by Rosalía, Pina Bausch and the dance from 'Pulp Fiction' have in common?

A mix of pop culture and references of classical and contemporary dance is what can be seen on the stage of the Mercat de les Flors (until the 28th), with the presentation of Supermedium, the new proposal by the Norwegian choreographer Ingri Fiksdal and the Catalan Núria Guiu. This piece, which is the large format version of the previous Medium (premiered in Oslo in 2022), seeks to vindicate the dancer's work, in addition to reflecting on the invisible and “witchcraft”, with the body as its channel of manifestation. The work produced by the Mercat is the fourth installment of the Cèl·lula project, an initiative that emerged in 2018 to promote local production and research in dance.

Introducing elements such as Rosalía's Chicken teriyaki dance, Umma Thurman's in Pulp Fiction or pieces by Pina Bausch, the work seeks to connect the past, present and future through the interpretations of nine dancers. “Dance seen as a phantasmagoria that crosses time, history, cultures and that manifests itself through our bodies,” says choreographer and dancer Núria Guiu, winner of the National Culture Prize in 2022.

Another relevant theme within the work is the dancer's claim as a worker. With the use of costumes and construction materials, dance is claimed as a job, which has also been made precarious. “For us, the role of dancer as a worker is very important. Based on the concept of the worker, we have proposed the idea of work uniforms,” says Fiksdal, a choreographer who has already performed on important stages around the world.

Supermedium arrives after the Cèl·lula project has opted for Flamingos (by Albert Quesada), Requiem nocturne (Pere Faura) and Made of space (Cia. Guy Nader and Maria Campos). With this initiative, the Market seeks to promote local talent, produce pieces and generate research around dance. "It was born as an embryonic project, based on research, production and being able to accompany the process from the beginning", says Àngels Margarit, director of Mercat de les Flors.

The piece will go on tour through Catalonia in autumn, starting in Lleida. In addition, it is expected that the production will achieve international projection, especially in Nordic countries where Fiksdal and Guiu have already performed before.
