Watch how the heron defends her calf

* The authors are part of the community of La Vanguardia readers

These spring days we can observe the gray heron chicks in their nests and how their mother defends them from any other bird that wants to harass them, as can be seen in these images captured for La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos.

The snapshots have been taken at the observation point of these birds in Les Masies de Voltregà, where there is a viewpoint in the Despujol meander, although the nest is on the other side of the Ter river which belongs to the municipality of Torelló. This way, they can be seen and photographed without disturbing them.

Gray herons breed in colonies, usually in tall trees near water. In this area, specifically, they take advantage of the Ter River.

Nests start out as a small platform of sticks, but can end up being a huge mass of accumulated material.

In this final series of photographs we can see in more detail various baby gray herons in their nests. In some you can see up to three chicks together.
