The Spanish productive model with a strong weight in the tourism sector has had an impact on the unemployment and affiliation data, which have been bad once again in the month of August. The number of unemployed grew by 24,826 people while 185,385 jobs were destroyed.
The positive fact is that the figures are less bad than in the months of August in recent years. The negative fact is that the labor market proves incapable of changing the productive model in which a lot of employment is created when the tourist campaign starts and is destroyed when it ends.
"For 25 years, unemployment has increased in August due to the seasonal cycles of the production model," explains the Ministry of Labor in a statement. The sector where unemployment grows the most is in services with more than 23,000 more unemployed. If this seasonal effect is isolated, the data shows that unemployment fell. Specifically in 23,373 people.
And if you look back, the rise in unemployment in August is the lowest since 2016 without counting the pandemic. Something similar happens in the case of affiliation. Job destruction is the lowest in a month of August since 2017 without counting the pandemic. And in seasonally adjusted terms, membership grows by almost 18,000 people.
So far this year, the figures are positive both in terms of unemployment and affiliation.
