Twilight sky over Cardona castle

In La Vanguardia Readers' Photos we can see this sequence of photographs with the incredible color changes during sunrise over the Cardona castle, in the Bages region.

The flushed sky changes colors, between red and orange and the purest yellow, as can be seen in these snapshots. This is known as candilazo, a meteorological phenomenon in which the clouds in the sky show a wide palette of colors that ranges from pink to the most intense orange.

As part of the phenomenon of dispersion of sunlight, in the morning and afternoon hours, when the sun is closer to the horizon, the light that reaches the Earth is soft tones between red and orange. In a certain way, when this light passes through the clouds, it illuminates them and could be said to color them with those tones.

The twilight light and color generate spectacular images of the imposing Cardona fortress, which concentrates centuries of history. The exceptional Collegiate Church of San Vicente stands out, a jewel of Catalan Lombard Romanesque.

Cardona Castle is probably the most important medieval fortress in Catalonia. It is located on a hill that overlooks the salt valley and the Cardener valley, as can be seen in the images, which attest to its strategic location.

It was built in the year 886 by Wifredo el Velloso. Romanesque and Gothic in style, it includes the so-called Sala Daurada and the Sala dels Entresòls.

Its jewel is the Minyona tower (from the 11th century), 15 meters high and more than 10 meters in diameter, and the Romanesque church of San Vicente de Cardona.
