Tragedy in Asturias: a mother and son die in an accident when they were going to a funeral

A 68-year-old woman and her 39-year-old son died this Wednesday in a head-on collision between two vehicles in the Asturian council of Langreo, in an accident in which four other people were injured, reported the Civil Guard and the Principality's Emergency Service. of Asturias (SEPA).

The accident occurred shortly before 1:00 p.m. at kilometer 5,500 of the AS-117 highway, known as the Nalón corridor, which had to be closed for about two hours. According to La Nueva España, the two deceased were heading to a funeral after leaving the Sama funeral home with two other family members, the woman's husband and the man's wife. Both are in serious condition at the Valle del Nalón Hospital.

The two occupants of the other vehicle are in the same hospital, a 64-year-old man in serious condition and another 67-year-old man with less severe injuries. The hypotheses, according to the newspaper El Comercio, indicate that this vehicle would have invaded the opposite lane, causing the violent crash. The driver of this car tested positive for drugs. He tested negative for alcohol.

SEPA firefighters went to the scene of the accident, who had to free the victims from both vehicles, as well as Civil Guard patrols to cut off traffic and several ambulances to care for the injured, some of whom were evacuated to the Valle Hospital. del Nalón.

The news has overtones of tragedy. The family of the deceased learned about the accident at the Lada church, where the funeral was to take place. The mass had been delayed waiting for the arrival of the occupants of that vehicle, now in pieces. An arrival that did not occur.

With these two deaths, a total of five people have died in the last four months in the Nalón corridor. The mayor of Langreo, Roberto García, demanded last December to put an end to the "bleed" of deaths that this highway leaves by splitting the road, at least, until San Martín del Rey Aurelio.
