The teaching competitions leave 300 places unfilled in Catalan, mathematics and technology

The Department of Education has today informed the unions that 779 teaching positions have been left unfilled in the extraordinary competition called by the Generalitat. Of this total, about 300 places correspond to the Catalan, mathematics and secondary technology specialties.

In secondary Catalan language and literature, 105 places have been vacated. 822 people applied for 657 places, but only 67% approved. In mathematics, a specialty in which many teachers are missing, a thousand candidates had applied for 800 places but, as in Catalan, 33% have not passed, leaving 96 vacancies.

In technology, on the other hand, the number of applications is similar to the number of vacant positions, which is why, despite having approved 81%, they have not been fully filled and 91 positions have been left vacant.

Another specialty that is difficult to fill is French, for which fewer people have opted than places and 33 remain.

Most of the 779 vacancies correspond to secondary school. Specifically, 671 places have remained unallocated. In primary school there are 77. and in FP, 101.

In primary school, the specialties with the most vacancies are therapeutic pedagogy (30), English (38) and music (6) where 57% of those presented have passed.

In vocational training, there are 47 places missing in computer applications, 40 in commercial processes, 38 in career guidance, 36 in administrative management and 33 in sales.

Likewise, it has been highlighted that there are specialties in which less than 60% of those presented have passed, such as physical education (50%), economics (50%), geography and history (56%), English (57%) and music ( 57%). In all of them there are more passes than places so there are no problems in the assignment.

Vacancies may increase if resignations occur in those specialties. Sources from the department warned that they foresee movements because there are teachers from the communities of Valencia and the Balearic Islands who have presented themselves to the oppositions of their community. If they win, they could give up their place.

In the case of Catalan, this would further deepen the lack of teachers in a specialty that is difficult to cover.

The language teachers of the official language school have left one square empty of Catalan and 2 of Arabic. In Catalan, 8 people showed up and 3 approved.

From now on, an assignment process opens. The grade will count for 60% and merits, such as seniority, for the remaining 40%.

The 779 vacant places that have not been covered by this competition (the merit competition has allowed 12,858 people to be filled, except for one Japanese teacher) will be added to the 2,179 already planned for the ordinary competitive examination to be held in the summer 2024, as reported by the Department of Education. And an undetermined number of positions resulting from the expansion of the workforce in recent years.

Those who pass the extraordinary competition but have not obtained a place will count merits in the 2024 opposition.
