The summer charm of Empordanet

Halfway between the city of Girona and the coastal towns of the Costa Brava, at the foot of the Gavarres Area of Natural Interest, we find a series of small charming towns where time seems to have stopped this summer.

It was the writer Josep Pla who baptized this portion of the Baix Empordà as l'Empordanet, a proud landscape under the protection of Montgrí, between medieval villages and beautiful fields.

You can start with Pals, with a Gothic nucleus located on top of a hill from where you can see a unique landscape, and visit the Romanesque tower of the old medieval castle (11th and 12th centuries).

We can continue visiting Peratallada. Declared a historical-artistic complex, it is one of the most important centers of medieval architecture in the Empordà, with its fortified castle, the palace, the walls, the Romanesque church of Sant Esteve and its alleys.

In Vulpellac, its castle-palace from the 14th century stands out, while La Bisbal d'Empordà is famous for its ceramics, the medieval castle-palace and its patisserie. In Fonteta you can try its appreciated recuit (cottage cheese).

Further west is Cruïlles, where you should not miss the Sant Miquel monastery, one of the main vestiges of Romanesque architecture in Catalonia. And, finally, we can also visit Monells, one of the most beautiful villages in the entire Empordanet by Josep Pla, which we have reviewed in The Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia.
