The Mudejar jewel of Tarazona

The fabulous cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Huerta de Tarazona is one of the great jewels of the Mudejar heritage of Aragon, as seen in this photographic report in La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos.

It is true that the Seo was built in the French Gothic style, but it maintains magnificent examples of the Mudejar style, including a Gothic-Mudejar cloister. As in the tower, the Mudejar blends with the Gothic in the impressive dome and in the cloister, according to Turismo de Aragón.

After three decades of restoration, the Tarazona Cathedral reopened its doors in 2011 and today it shines in all its splendor, as we can see in the photographs.

The interior surprises with its varied decoration and grandeur. The restoration uncovered the unique grisaille paintings that adorn the interior of the dome, described as the "Sistine Chapel of the Spanish Renaissance."

This jewel of Aragonese heritage suffered serious damage during the War of the Two Pedros (1356-1369). But this ended up causing it to be converted into a beautiful example of Gothic architecture with traces of Mudejar, as demonstrated by the cloister, the dome and the tower.

In the 16th century, the interior of the temple was renovated according to Renaissance aesthetics, with beautiful wall paintings. However, the later baroque contributions also stand out, with the main portico, which accesses the temple, and the back choir, where the paintings of Vicente Berdusán stand out.
