'The invisibles', or how to give visibility to hotel maids

There are groups that are not usually protagonists of fiction. One of them is, without a doubt, that of the housekeepers, those people who clean and clean the rooms of hotel establishments. Las invisibles, the new series that premieres this Monday on the SkyShowtime platform, will precisely try to "make visible this group and its job insecurity," its creator Héctor Lozano (Merlí) explains to La Vanguardia.

The protagonists of Las invisibles are a group of chambermaids from a five-star hotel on the Mediterranean coast. "We are a tourist country and I thought it was interesting to see that other side of tourism," says Lozano. "I don't know how they can handle making up to 26 rooms in six hours with all that it entails (back and muscle pain, depression, anxieties...) and with the fear, in addition to having a casualty and having another take their place," says Lozano, who thought it was time to change this situation and that "although obviously the first objective of the series is to entertain, there is also a point of wanting to make this hard work visible."

To document himself, he spoke with members of the Las Kellys union (as they call themselves "those who clean"), many of whom claimed that they are not invisible, and that is where the title of the series came from. Some of these housekeepers have already been able to see the first chapter and have thanked its creator for transmitting its truth with such realism.

Las invisibles has a luxury cast that includes Lolita, María Pujalte, Elena Irureta and the Mexican Yoshira Escárrega. Lolita is Espe, "a strong woman with a lot of character but also weak and sensitive, that is, human," she advances. Within a marriage that is enduring due to the inertia of the years, Espe will experience a sudden crush on a man who comes to the hotel to rehabilitate the spa.

One of her best friends and co-workers is Isabel, in charge of María Pujalte. "An insecure woman with more fears than Espe, that she goes from work to home and vice versa and doesn't want problems." The unexpected arrival at home of a somewhat lazy brother will shake up her life.

Elena Irureta is Pilar, who dies at the beginning of the first episode of a heart attack while making a bed in the hotel. "Her voice-over will follow her friends and somehow watch over and take care of them," reveals the creator of the series, who also adds that "since Pilar wanted to be a dancer, in each chapter there is a moment when she imagines herself the friends dancing, from a sirtaki to a pasodoble; they are little pills that give a unit and an optimistic tone to the series”.

Yoshira Escárrega completes the main cast. She gives life to Gladys, the youngest of all, "who has arrived from Mexico a long time ago wanting to change things and will be the one who unites the group when it comes to demanding improvements in her working conditions." Lozano affirms that he is very satisfied with the work of the actresses. "And of the actors, that we also have, like Alfonso Lara and Oriol Tarrasón".

Héctor Lozano would like viewers to see the housekeepers differently after watching the series: “It will go intrinsically; People will realize that a good word, a good look, or leaving the room dignified enough so that they have to do the bare minimum is much appreciated. It would be great if the series got that empathy.”

“These women are essential in the tourism sector and I still don't understand how they are treated. They are invisible not only to hoteliers but also to customers, many of whom don't even greet them. They are asked to be very discreet, silent and quick, as if they were bothering you”, continues Lozano, who also points out that one of the main struggles that the group is now having is to end outsourcing, an aspect that is also addressed in the series.

Despite the drama and suffering of the protagonists to get ahead with their lives and their families, “the joy and good vibes between them is very present; in this sense it is an optimistic and hopeful series in the fight against its exploitation”. The fiction is directed by Menna Fité (Merlí: Sapere Aude) and consists of eight episodes that will be released every Monday on the platform.
