The immaculate sunset of Salou

I share in La Vanguardia Readers' Photos these photographs of the Salou sunset that I captured during the Inmaculada bridge. Beautiful sunsets on the Costa Dorada as always.

One of the snapshots highlights the solar pillar, an atmospheric optical phenomenon in which a vertical beam of light appears to extend above and/or below a light source.

The effect is created by the reflection of light from small ice crystals that are suspended in the atmosphere or that comprise high-altitude clouds (for example, cirrostratus or cirrus clouds).

If the light comes from the sun (generally when it is near or even below the horizon), the phenomenon is called a solar pillar, as in this case in Salou.

According to the official version, the name of the city of Salou comes from the ancient Greek name of Salauris which means "the best city." This is what it was called during Roman domination.

Salou is a tourist town that offers a wide range of beaches, from small, rocky inlets to the busy Levante and Poniente beaches. It is a popular destination for windsurfing and sailing.
