The Government extends reinforcement in mathematics to high school

The school reinforcement plan announced last Sunday by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in Galicia was planned for primary and secondary school students in the subjects of mathematics and reading comprehension. The Government has also extended it to high school and basic vocational training students. Therefore, it will reach 5.3 million schoolchildren in public and private schools. This was announced this morning by the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Pilar Alegría, after the meeting of the permanent commission of the State School Council in the presence of the President of the Government. At this meeting, the School Council has transferred the report, approved unanimously, on the use of mobile phones, which proposes prohibiting it from children to secondary school.

"It is important that the government proposes solutions to a problem that we recognize must be improved, supporting students, teachers and families," said Alegría. “That is why we want to implement this plan that will have split-ups of teachers so that there is more personalized attention, with more resources for the centers and with extracurricular classes,” she added.

The minister has not specified the cost that should be reflected in this year's General State Budgets but has stated that "the final budget will be as ambitious as its objective." However, she added that, "the educational measures implemented by the Government have always been supported by significant financing, such as scholarships, which have a budget 70% higher than that of the PP."

Initially, the President of the Government had estimated the cost of the plan at 500 million, which included reinforcing mathematics from 3rd grade to 4th grade ESO with small groups in the classroom, co-teaching or splitting, and reinforcement classes outside of school hours for students. most lagging students.

In the case of reading comprehension, it extended from 1st grade to the end of secondary school. Now the two baccalaureate courses are added. The preliminary initiative is to increase reading time, increase practices that benefit reading comprehension, contributing to improving library material. It is also intended to improve oral expression.

Finally, the plans include teacher training that could be accompanied by financial compensation for teachers who follow specific training plans in subjects such as mathematics.

The minister  will transfer her proposal to the autonomous communities in a meeting to be held on January 31. From there, the autonomous communities will deploy at their discretion the aid that will arrive in the form of territorial cooperation plans. It is not ruled out to extend aid to summer time. This possibility depends, the minister said, on the decisions of the regional governments and educational centers.

Catalonia will propose that these plans be defined based on the vulnerability of the students, taking into account their socioeconomic profiles and cultural origin.

Cooperation plans already include this criterion, along with depopulation.
