The Generalitat allocates 10 million to promote theater, dance and the circus

The Department of Culture wants to fulfill its promise of reaching 2% of the Generalitat budget allocated to the cultural sector. Yesterday, the councilor Natàlia Garriga took a step forward, presenting the Plans d'Impuls del Teatre, la Dansa i el Circ.

For this, and until 2026, an average of more than three million euros will be allocated annually, until reaching the 10 million announced this morning in the presentation. If the Generalitat's budgets are approved, from 1.1% in 2021 with 298 million, it will reach 1.7% this year, with 566 million.

The objective is to “build a reference cultural system where everyone has a place, both when it comes to creating culture and when it comes to enjoying it,” the councilor declared. With 45 measures in total, the plans for dance and the circus reach their second edition, while the impulse plan for the theater premieres in 2024.

Among the measures for the theater, Garriga has highlighted three: the internationalization of Catalan local theater, with a special emphasis on Latin America, especially Buenos Aires; the Territori Escènic designation of origin, to expand the network of structures in exhibition spaces and reach small towns where there is no theatrical exhibition, with a pilot plan in the Jungle; and the Cap Butaca Buida initiative, on March 16, pioneer in the world, seed of the National Theater Day.

Regarding dance, the councilor has highlighted two of the 9 measures of this plan: the Pro365 project, which comes from the previous plan, with 15 programmers from all over Catalonia who follow the companies and shows throughout the year; and the Circuit Tardor in Dansa.

And for the circus, with 14 measures, such as the Circus Explosion, which promotes the exhibition throughout the territory, with the Mercat de les Flors as coordinator between municipalities and companies; and the Community Circus, with two days of reflection promoted by the Ateneu Popular Nou Barris.

“Only with a strong and reinforced professional sector, will we be able to bring culture to all the people of the country,” concluded Councilor Garriga.
