The electric cars with the best price-autonomy ratio, according to the OCU

Buying an electric car is not the majority option for Spaniards when considering buying a new vehicle. Between January and April 2023, 14,012 electric cars were registered in Spain, 4.60% of the market share, which continues to lead internal combustion engine cars. More than half of the car sales in the first quarter of the year correspond to gasoline (43.40%) and diesel (14.90%) copies.

But the price of fuels and the uncertain future that awaits thermal engine vehicles when in Europe, from 2035, only new copies that work with e-fuels are allowed to be sold, make electric cars a very attractive for the user's pocket. In addition to being a commitment to sustainability, the savings in the price of fuel compensates in the long run for the higher outlay involved in buying a car with this technology compared to combustion engine vehicles.

Although the price of cars has risen by an average of almost 40% in the last five years and can be an obstacle to accessing an electric vehicle, the market offers electric cars for less than 30,000 euros in which you can travel 200 kilometers . If you also have your own parking space and also the possibility of installing an adapted plug, buying an electric car can be a good purchase option.

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) analyzes which electric cars have the best price-range ratio, classified by category. The ranking is established from the quotient between the price of the vehicle and its estimated average autonomy without taking into account the benefits, safety or comfort offered by each model. The OCU emphasizes that the purpose of the study is to present a ranking of electric cars with the cheapest autonomy, according to the type of car.

The consumer organization warns that to calculate the autonomy, an electrical consumption of 15% higher than that approved by the manufacturer has been estimated. Likewise, it has chosen as a reference the most advantageous version when the car is offered with batteries of various capacities.

With all these considerations, the OCU has established a list of electric cars with the cheapest range by category.

This section analyzes the data for small electric cars (utilities, small utility vehicles and small SUVs) with the most economical autonomy.

The compact models and midsize SUVs that have the cheapest estimated range are as follows.

The cars with the largest dimensions are also the most expensive. The OCU then establishes a list with the five models with the best and cheapest estimated average autonomy.

The OCU reminds those who wish to buy an electric car that the Moves III Plan is still in force with which the Government subsidizes the acquisition of vehicles that work with said technology. The maximum aid can reach a ceiling of 7,000 euros in the case of buying a model of up to 45,000 euros and scrapping the previous car.
