The duality of the sea of L'Estartit

I share in La Vanguardia Readers' Photos this photograph that reflects the hardness and at the same time the beauty of a day on the beach in L'Estartit, in Baix Empordà, this Easter.

The scene is only witnessed by the lifeguard's position who, bored, awaits the long-awaited arrival of the bathers with the good weather, but, for now, he consoles himself with the distant company of the Medes Islands.

The Medas are declared a specially protected area of importance for the Mediterranean. It is one of the most important and largest maritime reserves in Catalonia.

These wild islands, located just 900 meters from the coast of L'Estartit and protected for more than 20 years, are a true paradise for scuba diving or boat trips. Its main attraction lies in the richness and diversity of the marine and terrestrial fauna and flora that it houses.

They had formerly been the preferred hiding place for pirates and, later, they were used by the Army as a surveillance place. They were inhabited until 1934, but currently the only construction is the Meda Gran lighthouse.
