The butane cylinder goes down again starting this Tuesday

The maximum retail price of the butane cylinder will be at 15.18 euros as of this Tuesday, 4.89% less than the current price of 15.96 euros in force since May. It is the lowest figure since May 2021, as reflected in the update in the Official State Gazette (BOE) this Monday.

As indicated by the Ministry for Ecological Transition, the new reduction in bottled liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) responds mainly to the sharp fall in the price of raw materials, of 25%. To a lesser extent, it is also due to the appreciation of the euro against the dollar, of 0.2%. Freight (transportation costs), on the other hand, have become more expensive by 16.6%.

The reduction offsets the increase of 53.3 cents per kg, 4.8% more than the previous period, in the marketing cost that is applied between this update and July 15, 2024.

The revision of the maximum sale price of LPG in containers between 8 and 20 kilograms, the traditional butane cylinder, is limited to an increase or decrease of 5%. The price excess or defect accumulates for its application in subsequent reviews.

Bottled LPG is a mixture of hydrocarbons, mainly composed of butane, which serves as an alternative to natural gas for energy consumption in pressure containers, especially in towns or urban centers without connection to the natural gas network. After decreasing its consumption by more than 25% in the last decade, 64.5 million LPG containers of different capacities are consumed in Spain.

The price of the cylinder was limited to a maximum of 19.55 euros on June 25, 2022 via royal decree law, in the midst of the great rise in energy products. The last time it peaked was on September 19 and has since dropped 22%.

The maximum cost of the bottle is reviewed bimonthly on the third Tuesday of the month. This revision is calculated based on the cost of raw materials (propane and butane) in international markets, as well as the cost of freight and the evolution of the euro-dollar exchange rate.
