A Barcelona pastry shop with more than 70 years of history has just won the award for the best xuixo in the world. This is Pasitisseria Triomf, at number 41 Rambla del Poblenou, which has just won the fourth edition of the contest dedicated to this cream-filled sweet, held this Sunday in l'Escala (Alt Empordà).

The jury was made up of professionals from the sweet world, such as pastry chefs Agustí Gardella, Àngel Garcia Pubill and Lluís Estrada, who have ensured that Triomf's xuixos have a perfect proportion of cream and oil, which gives them a very pleasant texture. Among other aspects, the judges evaluated the quality of the cream and frying, the flavor and the visual appearance.

In this pastry shop in Poblenou that opened in 1952 and is currently owned by Gisela Bellart, they make traditional sweets such as Lenten fritters, Easter cakes, panellets, nougats or Sant Joan cokes. They started as a pastry-delicatessen, because the parents of one of the founders were butchers and they wanted to pay tribute to them.

But in 1997, they renovated the premises and the establishment became only a pastry shop with tasting, which today also has an assortment of savory catering.

This Monday, Gisela Bellart will explain the secrets of the winning chuxo in a talk at the Girona Gastronomic Forum. This is the first time that a Barcelona establishment has won this competition, which will take place in Barcelona next year.

Gourmet Salvador Garcia-Arbós is the promoter of this contest that was born in 2018 and is now in its fourth edition. Last year he won the Juhé pastry shop, in La Escala.
