Surveillance cameras in troubled neighborhoods: Valencia's strategy against crime

The mayor of València, María José Catalá, announced yesterday the installation of four new surveillance and traffic management cameras in the neighborhoods of Benimàmet and Beniferri, on the outskirts of the city. The installation of these follows the strategy carried out in the conflictive neighborhood of Orriols where, after the implementation of the devices, the actions of the Local Police have been reduced by 30% in the affected streets.

According to data provided by the City Council co-governed by PP and Vox, in the last quarter of 2023, Local Police officers carried out 500 actions in these areas where residents have repeatedly reported insecurity problems, compared to 348 in the first quarter of 2024.

They will not be the only cameras installed in the city. At the end of March, the Mobility Department of the Valencia City Council agreed to place surveillance and traffic control cameras at the entrances and exits of the southern districts of the city of Valencia after the neighborhood representatives of Castellar, Font d 'In Corts, Pinedo and Unificadora de la Punta, they will request the adoption of concrete measures that can help improve security in these districts.

The idea of the municipal government is to continue expanding the network of traffic and preventive security cameras with the objective, the mayor explained yesterday, of turning València "into one of the safest cities in Spain."

To achieve this goal, municipal sources explained, different measures are being applied such as the launch of the Security, Support and Prevention Unit (USAP), redoubling efforts to expand the staff of the Local Police, in addition to the installation of cameras. preventive security that fulfill a double mission “traffic control and a deterrent function”

The first of the cameras, which began to be installed this Wednesday, is located in Benimàmet, on Camí Nou de Paterna at the height of Calle Bétera. In the coming weeks, two more cameras will be installed at the intersections of Calle Campament with Senda del Secanet and Calle Felipe Valls. The camera that will be located in Beniferri will be at the intersection between Calle Córdoba and Calle dels Ciprers.

Beyond the cameras, the City Council explained that it has reinforced the presence of the Local Police on the streets of Benimàmet in recent months, with a permanent presence of a patrol on morning, afternoon and night shifts, which is also reinforced with a police car more during the nights.
