Sánchez announces the construction of a new Navy ship that will cost 439 million

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Wednesday in Ferrol that Navantia will build a new supply ship for the Navy.

This new contract will guarantee 1,800 direct jobs. The ship will cost 439 million euros and is similar to the combat supply ship Cantabria that was built at the Navantia shipyard in Puerto Real and delivered to the Navy in 2010.

For Sánchez it will be a "great opportunity for the entire Ferrol region." The announcement occurs in the context of elections to preside over the Xunta de Galicia on February 18.

The president also recalled the construction program of the five F-110 frigates for the Navy for an amount of 4.3 billion euros which represents, he said, "an effort that represents the commitment we have with Galicia, with Ferrol, and with the Spanish industry".

Navantia is one of the largest companies in Galicia and in fact represents 11% of the industrial GDP of this community. The company belongs to the State Society of Industrial Participations (SEPI), which controls 100% of its capital, has a naval division and has become the main builder of maritime wind turbines in Spain in recent years.

Sánchez's announcement comes at a time when, somewhat further north, in Lugo, the multinational Alcoa has announced that it is delaying the reactivation of its aluminum production plant in San Cibrao, putting more than a thousand jobs at risk. of work in this region.

The BNG has requested the nationalization of this company. The unions, for their part, demand from the State and the Xunta, solutions to the decision of the multinational which, they fear, is the prelude to the definitive closure of the plant.
