Puigdemont continues to lead the Consell of the Republic after a process with low participation

There has been no surprise. The former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont will continue to lead the Consell of the Republic after the internal process that has been held in recent days.

The former president has prevailed in Bulgaria, with 92.4% of the support, over two unknown candidates: the lawyer and councilor of Canet de Mar (Barcelona) Jordi Castellà Andrés (5.5%) and the Balearic journalist Lluís Felipe Lorenzo (0.8%). Thus, Puigdemont has added 8,263 votes, for Castellà's 493 and Lorenzo's 66.

In the vote, which started on Thursday and ended early this Monday, 9.94% of those registered in the sovereign entity based in Belgium participated. 89,970 members had the right to vote.

The participation, although low, is greater than that in the last consultation of the entity, in which a vote was taken - although it was not binding and had no consequences - on the role of the pro-independence parties in the negotiation with the PSOE for the investiture of Pedro Sánchez. On that occasion, 4,021 people voted, 4.45% of those registered. In fact, the members were in favor of blocking the Spanish legislature, but in the end both Esquerra and Junts signed an agreement with the socialists.
