Podemos promotes a law to make the change from variable to fixed rate mortgages free

Podemos will register this Tuesday in Congress a bill to make the change from a variable mortgage to a fixed rate free of charge, whose conditions would have to equal or improve those that the entities offer their new clients, and urges the PSOE to accept this initiative immediately.

With this measure, according to sources from the purple formation, the aim is to protect households from future increases in interest rates, which have gone from 0% in June 2022 to 3.5% in March 2023, which It implies increases of up to 350 euros per month in the mortgage payment.

"This has caused serious economic problems for millions of families, since the majority of mortgages in our country depend on the evolution of the Euribor, at the same time that it has reported millionaire benefits fallen from heaven to commercial banks," they say from the purple party.

Podemos' proposal establishes the free change from a variable mortgage to a fixed one from the same entity (which would be obliged to offer the same conditions as to new clients) and the free change from a variable mortgage to a fixed one from another entity (which would assume the costs of the operation). It also points out that, if the bank where the client had the variable mortgage presented a counteroffer to avoid the change to another entity, it would have to assume all the expenses of the operation.

In the opinion of Podemos, it is a "doubly effective" measure, since it reduces the economic uncertainty of families and provides stability to the financial system, reducing the risk of default.

With all this, Podemos urges the PSOE to act "urgently" to "prevent millions of households from seeing their economy and housing threatened" by the rise in interest.

In this sense, the purples recall that last September they proposed to limit the rise in variable mortgages (to 0.1%) to avoid economic damage to families, and demand that their partner "do not waste more time and legislate now , adopting this measure, to protect millions of homes.
