Patriarchy and new masculinities, in 'The possibility of tenderness'

The Chilean theater company La Re-Sentida returns to the Teatre Lliure to present The Possibility of Tenderness, a production about patriarchy and new masculinities, on November 23, 24 and 25.

On this occasion, there are seven young people, between 14 and 18 years old, who take the stage, who have decided to resist the cultural mandate that imposes on them to be aggressive and authoritarian and embark on the construction of their own masculinity, facing the fear of be insulted, humiliated and marginalized.

Its creators, Marco Layera and Carolina de la Maza, have referred to the difficulty they had in the workshops "because few children showed up, while in the previous production, Landscapes to not color (Lliure, 2019), where it was all girls, in "Each call a high number of candidates attended."

Layera has referred to the seven members as "the chiques", a very widespread formula in some South American countries, since they are people with diverse identities, "outside of what is considered normal."

In this new production, which will be part of a trilogy, Layera and De la Maza reflect again "on the violence imposed by adultcentrism and the strategies of control over bodies."

Layera tries to answer the reason for the few male attendees: "We realized that the boys who arrived did not correspond to the general norm. These boys are the norm. Why do we repress the fact of touching each other among the boys? They are a bubble, are not the norm, and they found a space to express their affection, their tenderness. Sometimes there are young people who give this affection to a stuffed animal."

The creators of La Re-Sentida explain that the material with which the piece has been constructed arises from the performers, from questions they asked their parents and grandparents. De la Maza adds: "These norms are closely linked to violence, to the impossibility of showing fragility."

Jose Miguel Araya Moreno, Dimitri Bueno Ferrer, Camilo Burgueño Espejo, Efrain Chaparro Perez, Marcos Cruz Andulce, Matías Mendez González and Leftrarü Valdivia Castro are the seven performers of The Possibility of Tenderness, which premiered in September in Germany, is on tour through Europe and will arrive in Chile in December.

In March, in Lliure de Gràcia, La-Resentida also presented Oasis of Impunity, an allegation about institutional violence.
