Only two out of every 10 taxpayers make donations to non-profit entities

Only 18% of taxpayers make donations to non-profit entities. The rest either do not declare them or do not carry them out at all, according to data compiled by the General Council of Economists-Reaf that was presented today in a virtual press conference from Madrid.

The average deduction of these contributions per taxpayer and year is 166 euros. These are data from 2021 because they are the latest available. The cost of these deductions for the Treasury - understood as lower collection - is 345 million euros, which is equivalent to 3% of all the tax benefits that exist in Spain such as those derived from maternity or family minimums, the secretary explained. REAF-CGE technician, Rubén Gimeno. The taxpayers who contribute the most are those who declare an income of between 30,000 and 60,000 euros.

In the case of companies, collaboration with NGOs and other non-profit entities is even lower than in individuals. On average, companies deduct 12,825 euros for donations to patronage entities, although only 1.2% of corporate taxpayers apply the deduction.

This January 1, a regulatory change has come into effect that increases deductions for contributions from both individuals and companies. In personal income tax, the base of contributions to which a deduction of 80% can be applied has been expanded from 150 to 250. And for the rest it increases from 35 to 40%.

The Council of Economists has updated its guidance on the real cost to the taxpayer of making a donation. For example, when you pay 100 euros to an NGO, the real cost is 20 euros because the other 80 are returned to the taxpayer by the Treasury. In the event that the deduction is 1,000 euros, the real cost is only 500.
