Olot prohibits electric scooters in the center after 23 accidents in a year and a half

The City Council of Olot (Girona) has prohibited electric scooters in the center of the city. It was approved by the plenary session held this Thursday, through a modification of the city's mobility ordinance.

The consistory has made this decision after in the last year and a half -since January 2022- the Local Police have denounced 220 people for going with the scooter and 23 accidents have occurred.

Half of the accidents were hit by a pedestrian and four people were seriously injured, while the rest were slightly injured or unharmed. Regarding the infractions, of the 220 complaints filed by the Local Police, the vast majority (153) were for not wearing a helmet.

In another 26 the agents have fined for more than one person on the scooter, fourteen for driving on the sidewalk, eleven more for skipping a traffic light, eight for using the mobile phone while driving, another seven for going faster than allowed and one for circulate drink.

In this way, Olot grants the consideration of vehicles to scooters and bicycles that will have to comply with the indications established by the ordinance in terms of directions and times of passage through the Old Town.

The modification of the municipal circulation text has been initially approved with the contrary vote of the CUP, PSC and Activem and in favor of the rest of the formations with the commitment to work together to gather all the sensitivities and contributions
