The Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating whether there may be a mafia behind the attempted occupation of a new block in the Eixample Sur neighborhood of Girona. This Sunday a total of 18 people occupied the newly built building, although the Mossos d'Esquadra managed to evict them. The police action resulted in two arrests for damage and usurpation.
The events occurred this Sunday, around 9 in the morning, when a Mossos d'Esquadra patrol detected suspicious activity inside the buildings. The agents requested reinforcements and members of the Regional Operational Resources Area (ARRO) and the Citizen Security Unit (USC) were deployed to the scene of the events.
The local police were also requested. Finally, police action made it possible to stop the occupation and the agents managed to make them leave the properties two doors down from the block to which they had entered illegally.
The development in question, made up of 91 two- and three-bedroom apartments, a community pool and other services, was already facing its final stretch. According to Habitat on its website, 80% of the homes were already sold. The first tenants were going to move in shortly.
This afternoon some workers were working on the floors to complete what was missing from the work and fix the damage caused. The locks of several doors were broken with hammers. The block has been reinforced with private security to prevent new occupation attempts.
Habitat sources have explained that they have not yet been able to assess how much the damage amounts to, although they assure that "they are minimal" beyond the broken locks. The company maintains courtesy visits for the owners so that they can see their apartments, visits that begin this week as a prior step to handing over the keys.
