Idei was appointed president of the company in 1995 and in 1998 he added that position as CEO. He was in charge of the Japanese corporation until 2005, and under his leadership, Sony strengthened its video game business and launched the PlayStation 2 video game console, making this branch the most profitable of the company, which also expanded its commitment to video games at that time. music business and audiovisual distribution.
"During his seven years as CEO, Idei made an immense contribution to Sony in its evolution into a global company," current chairman and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said in a statement.
The head of Sony has also stated that the two years in which he was part of the board led by Idei "marked a before and after in his career" and inspired him for his current management of the company.
Idei died on June 2 due to liver failure, as detailed by Sony, which plans to organize a memorial in his memory.
