Nicola Sturgeon's husband arrested in investigation into SNP funding

Police have arrested the husband of former Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon in connection with an investigation into the finances of the Scottish National Party (SNP), as the BBC has advanced.

Peter Murrell, 58, was taken into police custody on Wednesday morning.

The police investigation is looking into what happened to more than 600,000 pounds (about 690,000 euros) raised by Scottish independence activists in 2017, which were supposed to be reserved for spending on that issue, but did not appear in the party's archived accounts.

In an interview on a podcast on the same chain last Sunday, the former prime minister explained that rumors about her private life that have circulated on the internet were "part of the reason" that led her to present her unexpected resignation in February.

"I want to have a little more anonymity, simply to protect something that people take for granted in their lives and that I had forgotten," said the former SNP leader, who this week handed over command of the pro-independence party to Humza Yousaf.
