New number 1: Alcaraz yields the throne to Djokovic

The tenth victory at the Australian Open allows the Serbian Novak Djokovic to return to world number 1, dethroning the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz. The 19-year-old tennis player from Murcia was the youngest to reach that privileged position, which he reached after winning the US Open in September last year. Since then he has chained 20 uninterrupted weeks at the top, becoming the 16th player with the longest presence in the first place of the ranking.

Ballasted by injuries, Alcaraz has not been able to compete in recent tournaments, which has prevented him from adding and ceding the throne to the new Australian Open champion, Novak Djokovic, who yesterday equaled Rafa Nadal with 22 Grand Slams to his credit.

Djokovic and Nadal are the stars this week in the ATP world rankings. The Serb earns 2,000 points, after not participating in the 2022 edition due to his refusal to be vaccinated against the covid and the Spaniard loses 1,955 after his defeat, with injury included, in the second round of the tournament, which makes him fall to the sixth place on the list.

Alcaraz only loses 90 points in the first Grand Slam of the season, which allows him to stay in second place and the Greek Stéfanos Tsitsipás, who would have been number 1 in the event of victory, as a finalist adds 480 points, with which he rises to the third step of the world podium, lost by the Norwegian Casper Ruud. One of the big victims in Australia is Daniil Medvedev after losing 1,110 points and leaving the top10, falling 4 positions to number 12.

Djokovic begins his 374th week at the top of the rankings and stalks the absolute record of the German Stefanie Graf who holds it with 377 weeks as world number 1.

In addition to Alcaraz and Nadal, the rest of the Spaniards in the top 100 are: Pablo Carreño (16), Roberto Bautista (24), Alejandro Davidovich (32), Albert Ramos (37), Jaume Munar (67), Pedro Martínez (72) , Bernabé Zapata (74) and Roberto Carballés (77).

As for the Ibero-Americans, the top 100 are: Diego Schwartzman (ARG,28), Francisco Cerundolo (ARG,31), Sebastian Baez (ARG,47), Pedro Cachin (ARG,68), Federico Coria (ARG,68). ARG (69), Thiago Monteiro (BRA,78), Daniel Elahi Galan (COL,81), Thomas M. Etcheverry (ARG,82), Joao Sousa (POR,84), Facundo Bagnis (ARG,88) and Alexander Tabilo (CHI,97).

In the women's category, Aryna Sabalenka, winner of her first major in Australia, rises to second position in the WTA world rankings, gaining three steps, although far from the Polish Iga Swiatek who continues to maintain an advantage of 4,385 points. The Tunisian Ons Jabeur falls to third place on the podium, while the Kazakh Elena Rybakina, as a finalist at the Australian Open, gains 15 positions and enters the last place in the top 10.

The first Spaniards on the list are Sara Sorribes (74) and Nuria Párrizas (75). Garbiñe Muguruza still hasn't hit bottom and this week she has lost 9 positions to be number 82. Two other Spaniards are in the top 100, Cristina Bucsa in 86th place and Rebeka Masarova, in 100th.
