Naturgy and Enagás Renovable invest 485 million in a green hydrogen plant

Naturgy has partnered with Enagás Renovable to give new life to the old thermal power plant that the company headed by Francisco Reynés has on the land of La Robla in León. Both companies presented yesterday the project for a future green hydrogen plant with the capacity to produce 280 megawatts (MW) and in which they will jointly invest 485 million euros, which is scheduled to start up in 2026.

The Secretary of State for Energy, Sara Aagesen, together with various local authorities, attended the presentation of the project carried out by the CEO of Enagás Renovable, Antón Martínez, and the Director of New Businesses at Naturgy, Silvia Sanjoaquín.

The project is associated with the development of a photovoltaic solar generation plant that will be made up of various parks located in neighboring municipalities and whose total capacity to serve the plant will be 450 MW.

With this infrastructure, the developer companies estimate that the emission into the atmosphere of more than 430,000 tons of CO2 per year will be avoided, contributing to the decarbonization of the industrial processes of companies in the area.

"This project reinforces our commitment to the energy transition and will allow us to support the decarbonization of the industries in the area, which will also be able to benefit from the efficiencies generated by the increase in production capacity," said the CEO of Enagás. Renewable, Anton Martinez,

To do this, both promoter companies have already identified potential customers for this renewable hydrogen in industry in the area, such as the factory that Cementos Tudela Veguín has in La Robla. Likewise, sustainable mobility actions are planned in the Autonomous Community, such as those promoted by the company Alsa for interurban lines in the province.

But it will not only be the large companies in the area that can benefit from the impact of this project.” The new green hydrogen project in La Robla will generate in the region and the potential of Spain in the promotion of renewable gases. "This project will allow the development of renewable hydrogen production, promoting a quantitative leap to develop economies of scale and improve competitiveness," said Silvia Sanjoaquín, director of New Businesses at Naturgy.
