Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating a crime of horse abuse at a horse race in Ripollès

Mossos d'Esquadra of the Environment Division are investigating a case of animal abuse in an equestrian center in Ripollès where three dead horses have been located and another three have been operated on to be in poor condition.

Last Friday, December 29, agents from the Environment Division went to an equestrian center located in the Ripollès region to carry out an inspection at the request of the Girona Territorial Service of the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda. According to the information received, there could be animals in poor health conditions in this equestrian center.

The agents carried out an inspection of the equestrian center during which they located three dead horses, two of them probably sacrificed by gunshot. In addition, the police verified that there were 19 live horses on the farm, of which three were seized for alleged animal abuse. These three specimens were transferred to a recovery center.

After the first police inquiries were made, it was found that the horse company investigated had not carried out the correct arrangements with the horses and that the corpses of the sacrificed horses were distributed around the property in a state of decomposition.

The agents identified the person responsible for the horse riding and seized the firearm with which the animals were allegedly sacrificed. In this sense, it is worth remembering that the sacrifice of animals for health reasons is an act typical of the professional practice of veterinary doctors in exceptional cases. And also that the rules do not allow any exception other than veterinary ones.

The investigation remains open and arrests have not been ruled out to clarify the responsibilities that may arise from any collaborator in the acts investigated.
