More than thirty species of amphibians and reptiles in lower Tordera in just two years

Lower Tordera (Maresme) is a region of great interest for its fauna and flora, but in recent decades it has not received the attention it deserves. CaixaBank and the Iluro Foundation have allowed this proposal to continue, which combines field work and dissemination to conserve a highly endangered group of animals. As a result of this work, 30 species of amphibians and reptiles have been cataloged in just two years.

Amphibians and reptiles, according to Naturalistes de la Tordera, are one of the most endangered groups of vertebrates in the world. However, society's knowledge of this group is scarce, and in some cases they are perceived as dangerous animals, as in the case of snakes, or repulsive, such as toads.

During 2023, with the support of the Medi Ambient call from CaixaBank and Fundació Iluro, it has been possible to continue the Atlas of Amphibians and Reptiles of Baixa Tordera, which began during January 2022 and which, to date, has been able collect more than 1,500 observations of more than 30 species of amphibians and reptiles.

Lower Tordera is a region of great importance for this group due to its singularities, being considered a hot spot on an Iberian scale. During the current year, dissemination and field work has been combined, helping to understand the situation of the species present but also explaining to society the great biological value of the lower Tordera.

Publications have been made on the NatMonT association website and on social networks, and a scientific article has been written about the tin turtle (Emys orbicularis). The Naturalistes del Montnegre y la Tordera association is a young entity, born in July 2020, but which has been very active and hopes with actions like this that environmental conditions and sensitivity towards nature improve significantly within the association. society that surrounds them.
