Monago rectifies his words about Judge De Prada and says his reference to lawfare was "unfortunate"

The senator of the PP and former president of the Junta de Extremadura, José Antonio Monago, has rectified his accusations of 'lawfare' that he made in the Senate Plenary against the judge of the National Court José Ricardo de Prada, describing these references as "unfortunate" and admitting that he was "wrong."

"I wanted to clarify that I firmly believe in judicial independence, that I should not have made that reference to any judge, in this case to Judge De Prada, and that therefore the reference I made regarding 'lawfare' was unfortunate," Monago proclaimed in statements to Europa Press.

Precisely, the words that Monago proclaimed last week in the Senate Plenary found their response in Judge De Prada himself, who asked the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) for protection against his accusations.

In his letter, he requested protection from the governing body of the judges as he considered his judicial independence "disturbed" as a result of Monago's words.

"Mr. Bolaños, the biggest case of 'lawfare' that has been known in the political history of Spain, well, you rocked it. Because a judge, Judge de Prada, introduced a paragraph in a sentence regarding the sentence on the 'Gürtel', which caused the fall of Mr. Rajoy's Government," said the 'popular' senator in the Plenary Session of the Upper House on December 12.

Given this, Monago has rectified these statements, emphasizing that "there is no 'lawfare' in Spain" and admitting that he should not have made reference to Judge De Prada.
