Mocedades defends the presumption of innocence of Plácido Domingo

Mocedades has clearly positioned himself in favor of the presumption of innocence of Plácido Domingo, whom he defends as an artist from the accusations of sexual harassment and abuse of power that more than twenty women have leveled at him. The group led by Izaskun Uranga has just presented a new version of Eres tú, one of their most emblematic songs and whose 50th anniversary is already being celebrated. In the video that they have shot, the tenor appears interpreting it from a recording studio.

"We hope that everything is clarified for the good of all parties, but in any case what matters to us is the Plácido Domingo artist, who is a world icon, and the Plácido Domingo person, who has behaved extraordinarily well with us. ", said the member and manager of Mocedades, José Miguel González when he received the Estrellas del Siglo award from the Latin Music Institute on Monday.

Up to 127 official versions exist of Eres tú, which has been recorded in 16 languages. But on this occasion, Mocedades has chosen to cover it with Plácido Domingo. "We don't get involved in personal issues, we like his classical music," Izaskun Uranga said on Monday, according to the Efe agency. "Plácido is a true gentleman in classical music", they say, and this has been the reason why they have chosen to work with him.

The arrangements of this new version of Eres tú, which was released last Friday, are signed by Jacobo Calderón, the composer's son, together with Plácido Domingo, with whom they collaborated decades ago. A collaboration that took place during the pandemic and at a distance, with the participation of the Bratislava Symphony.

Uranga, for his part, has asserted that "there has not been anything yet" against the tenor and has regretted that the media do not speak of him as an artist. "I don't doubt that it happened, but that doesn't matter to me, I like how he puts his voice to sing the songs and how he makes different versions for you," says Uranga, who describes the tenor as "a very nice person."

"For the rest, I have nothing to say," said the singer. And even more: "You cannot throw overboard a wagon like the one this gentleman has." "Be careful, as a woman that I am, if I have to say what I think in that sense, maybe I'm going to break a little," added Uranga.

The first time that Plácido Domingo worked with the Bilbao band was in the eighties, with the song Maitechu mia. During the Estrellas del Siglo award ceremony for Mocedades, a video appeared in which Plácido Domingo congratulated the group on their "golden wedding anniversary": "Congratulations on all that you have given to Spain and the world with your art."

The new song has been presented at the Ateneo de Madrid, where the Mocedades group has also received the Star of the Century award from the Latin Music Institute, from its director, Daniel Martín Subiaut, and from the Mexican ambassador to Spain, Quirino Ordaz.
