Mercedes defends Hamilton after his accident with Alonso

The great protagonists of the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix were the Red Bulls, especially Max Verstappen, winner of the race, but the test at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit also left the controversial accident between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, who criticized on the radio the English maneuver.

"What an idiot closing the door from the outside. We had done a mega start but this guy only knows how to drive when he starts first", the Spaniard complained after the incident on the first lap, at the Les Combes chicane, with the Mercedes driver, who was the only one injured by the blow, withdrawn from the race just a few meters later.

For his part, Alonso, who in the next lap made a gesture to Hamilton, standing outside the margins of the track, came out unscathed and finished the Grand Prix in a creditable fifth place. "At least I already know what he thinks of me. I haven't left him any room. It was a mistake and I paid the price," acknowledged the Briton at the end of the race.

The controversy, however, did not end there and the Mercedes team boss, Toto Wolff, came out in defense of his driver. "Well, it is true that Hamilton has started many times from the front. And he has won seven Formula 1 world championship titles, so the strategy seems to have worked for him," explained the Austrian in statements collected by the motorsport portal. com.

Wolff was also not shy about admitting the 37-year-old veteran driver's fault: "Yes, he just didn't leave room for him in the interior. Fernando was on top of the piano, there wasn't much more he could have done and yes, I apologize for the incident, from the team's point of view. Rarely does something like this happen to Lewis."

Hamilton's Mercedes did not finish the race, while George Russell's could only be fourth, so the Barkley team's drivers still haven't climbed to the top of the podium. "We have the ambition to win races this year and in Budapest it was quite possible," Wolff looked confident in the remaining eight races.
