Madrid plans Operation Camp: burying the A-5 and 10,700 homes

Operation Camp will start in 2025, will include the second section of the undergrounding of the A-5 in the capital starting from Los Poblados Avenue and includes the construction of 10,700 homes, 60% of them protected, as announced this Friday the Secretary of State for Housing and Urban Agenda, David Lucas.

This was reported to the media by the Ministry, after meeting with the delegate of Urban Planning, Environment and Mobility of the Community of Madrid, Borja Carabante. Lucas has specified that he expects the tender for the urbanization works to be carried out during 2025.

Along these lines, he specified that in this first half of the year the urban planning initiative will be presented so that the City Council can give "the go-ahead" and the urbanization project can be approved. It has also been agreed to review the agreement to analyze urban planning obligations and economic obligations.

"What we have agreed is that the burying of A-5 will also be included in Operation Camp, in this operation that includes these 10,700 homes (...) I think we also have to think that the neighborhood, not only has to be a neighborhood that includes 10,700 homes, but linked to the policy that this Ministry has been developing, it has to tend towards quality in construction," he stressed.

For its part, Carabante has recalled that the first section of the undergrounding of the A-5, from Paseo de Extremadura to Los Poblados Avenue, will be tendered before the end of January, a section that the central Government will continue in the framework of Operation Camp.

"As a consequence of this meeting and updating the commitments on the part of the Ministry with the development of Operation Camp, this section will continue, in such a way that the connection of Los Poblados Avenue can also be remodeled and reach the completion of Operation Camp," he detailed.

The first section will begin this year by the City Council and work is expected to begin at the end of 2024. "It will have to go in parallel to the execution of the homes in such a way that once Operation Camp is completed the 10,700 homes," he stated.

The Madrid City Council has expressed its "full willingness to expedite the processing and launch this Operation, which is absolutely essential for the development of the city."
