Luis Zahera, the favorite villain of Spanish cinema, Goya for best supporting actor for 'As bestas'

Four years after winning his first Goya for best supporting actor for El reino, Luis Zahera repeated the feat this Saturday in the same category for his impressive role in As bestas, also directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and based on a true event. . The Galician, 56 years old and one of the most popular performers today, was the clear favorite with his character as Xan Anta, a guy who transmits tension at all times and who falls out with a French couple who comes to town with desire to make a series of changes that neither Xan nor his brother will like at all.

Zahera, who defines himself as a perfectionist and nostalgic, has won over his co-star Diego Anido, Ramón Barea (Cinco little wolves), Fernando Tejero and Jesús Carroza (both from Modelo 77) with the 'stubborn'. From the hands of Álvaro Morte and Aitana Sánchez Gijón, Zahera has come out on stage at the very launched FIBES Palace of Congresses and Exhibitions. "I am indebted to all of you", he said, thanking Sorogoyen and Isabel Peña for the award because "I have always wanted to shoot a western and kill a Frenchman", he mentioned in reference to the character played by actor Denis Menochet. His role, for which he has also received the Feroz Award, stands at the top of a triumphant filmography riddled with villains, such as Cell 211. He had previously appeared in Los lunes al sol or Diario de un skin.

The actor discovered his vocation as a young man when one day his sister Ángeles took him to see the play Angélica on the threshold of heaven. "It was a revelation," he said. The beginnings were not easy at all. In 1992 he traveled to New York and had to earn a living in various trades, from hanging coats in a fancy restaurant to painting or helping in demolition of buildings. When he returned to Spain he pursued his dream in small plays and it didn't take long for him to succeed with the series Mareas Vivas, on Galician television.

Then came other national series such as El comisario, Hospital central or Sin tetas no hay paraíso. As a result of then he has become one of the most sought after secondary, especially to play bad and dark guys. As bestas is the third collaboration with Sorogoyen after May God forgive us and The Kingdom. Zahera loves comedy and has confessed that he really wants to be a leading man and change register. At the moment, he acts as a monologist with the play Chungo, where he reviews his personal and professional life.
