Kevin Spacey cleared of sexual assault charges against him

The Kevin Spacey serial has come to an end. The American actor has been found not guilty of the nine charges of sexual abuse that he had pending. This has been officially announced by the Southwark court, in London, which was handling the case. Spacey was emotional as the jury read the verdict, crying and hugging his manager and the other members of his legal team before leaving the room.

The alleged incidents for which the interpreter was accused occurred between 2001 and 2013. Spacey would have performed different inappropriate behaviors on four men, from touching the crotch to oral sex when one of them was unconscious. It was one of the most famous cases of the Me Too movement, which nipped in the bud one of the most prolific careers in television and cinema in the United States.

The deliberation of the English jury lasted a total of 12 hours and 26 minutes, after having to postpone sessions during the last two days because they did not agree. Before reaching the verdict, they had to listen to testimony for three weeks, recounting the experiences they had suffered with Spacey. Of the nine charges, seven were classified as sexual abuse, while the remaining two were for forcing relationships, one of them with penetration, without consent.

During these weeks of trial, the defense of the New Jersey-born actor tried to convince the court that his client had already been tried: by social networks. Patrick Gibbs KC, a lawyer for the defendant, insisted that the accusations were false, and that the people who brought him before the law lied "for reasons that, in the end, only they will know." Similarly, Gibbs accused the fourth victim of being under the influence of alcohol when his case occurred.

The lawyer also made a plea to the jurors, trying to convince them that Spacey was innocent of any charge. “It is not a crime that you like sex, even if you are famous it is not a crime to have sex, and it is not a crime to have casual sex. And it is not a crime to have sex with someone of the same gender, because we are in 2023 and not in 1823 ”, were his words. One of the many actions of the defense that, now, have obtained their fruits.

It coincides that today, in addition, was the 64th birthday of the interpreter, who was received with friendly faces by his lawyers. At the time, Spacey considered that the accusations were "loose", in addition to classifying them as "crazy" and "stabbing in the back". Throughout the judicial process, he showed a serious, undaunted face, which was completely broken once the jury confirmed that he had been declared innocent.
