Joaquín Sabina, 75 years of love and excess

“I don't want February 14 or a happy birthday,” sings Joaquín Sabina in Contigo, one of his most celebrated love songs. It is unknown if on Wednesday he will celebrate Valentine's Day with the Peruvian photographer Jimena Coronado, whom he married on June 20, 2020, after more than two decades together, but the truth is that today the skinny man from Úbeda, as knows him and where he was born, he turns 75, that is, almost 27,400 days and as many nights.

The author of poems turned into hymns such as Princess, And they gave us 10, Melancholy Street, And yet, City fish, On the boulevard of broken dreams or 19 days and 500 nights, reaches 75 with the unknown about his future on stage. Last December, in Madrid, he put an end to the Against All Odds tour, a title that alludes to having survived the serious health problems of recent years.

The first warning came to him on August 24, 2001, he suffered a cerebral infarction, and although mild and from which he recovered in a few weeks, it plunged him into depression: he realized that he had to put an end to his disordered life and excesses of energy. the one who boasted and to whom he had sung so much. In May 2005 she had to cancel a concert in Gijón due to acute laryngitis.

The second serious health warning was in May 2011 when he had to cancel part of his American tour due to acute diverticulitis with risk of complications. And although he was able to resume his tour and apparently get on with his life, in early 2016 he had to undergo surgery because diverticulitis could end in peritonitis.

On June 18, 2018, he was forced to suspend his tour I deny everything, because two days before he became completely silent during the concert at the WiZINK Center in Madrid. And just 4 years ago, on her 71st birthday, while on that same stage she was performing with Joan Manuel Serrat on the No hay dos sin tres tour, Sabina rushed into the safety pit, not seeing the limit of the stage, blinded by a focus. He suffered an intercranial hematoma and a shoulder injury.

He is from Madrid by heart and by adoption, although he was born in Úbeda (Jaén). He studied Romance Philology in Granada, until in 1970 he had to go into exile in London, after attacking a bank branch in protest of the Burgos trial. But his life, more than because of his ideology or the cities in which he has lived, has been marked by women.

From 1986 to 1998 he was with Isabel Oliart. They had two daughters Carmela (35) and Rocío (31). He currently maintains an excellent relationship with both of them, although he recognizes that when they were little they was an absent father.

In 1992 and while he was with Isabel Oliart, he began a relationship with the model Cristina Zubillaga. They broke up 5 years later and one of their most applauded songs was born, 19 Days and 500 Nights. In 1999 he began his relationship with Jimena, his current wife, although he met her in 1994 when she took some photos of him in Peru. Rosa de Lima is dedicated to her.

But Virtues Artero Chispa, his first love and to whom he dedicated the song Una de Romanos, have also been important in his life. Arianne Sved, a brief relationship that led to Princess. The Argentine Lucía Inés Correa was his first wife. She got married in 1977 to get an overnight pass, while she was doing military service, according to what she confessed. She divorced 10 years later.
