International travelers left 9,400 million in Madrid in 2022

The Madrid coffers totaled more than 9,400 million euros in 2022, thanks to the spending of tourists from the United States, in the lead as the main issuing market (16%), followed by those of France, Italy, the United Kingdom and Mexico.

This is stated in the Madrid Tourism Yearbook with figures for 2022, which shows that last year the tourism sector recovered after the pandemic with more than 9.22 million visitors that generated more than 20 million overnight stays, with figures still below 2019, when 10.45 million visitors and 22 million overnight stays were added.

The majority of travelers in the capital were international, who accounted for 58% of international overnight stays and left a daily average of 276 euros. Of the ten main issuing markets, four are long distance -USA, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil-.

October was the best month registering more than 900,000 visitors, most of them international, while December was the best month for tourism in Spain with 460,000 national visitors.

As for Easter, the spokesperson for the Madrid City Council, Inmaculada Sanz, has assured that normalcy has been the tone that has marked the first days of the security device, which is made up of 1,350 reinforcement municipal police officers, 150 toilets from Samur -Civil Protection and 500 mobility agents.

"We are at very, very high (tourist) occupancy figures and even so the trend has been normal, and we hope that this will end," said the delegate for Security, Spokesperson and Emergencies of the Government of José Luis Martínez-Almeida.

Sanz recalled that, for this Holy Week in which there are up to 160 religious events, there are 1,350 municipal police officers who reinforce the device, added to the usual operations, and the canine unit, the squad, the drone unit also participate and the central security units so that "everything develops normally" and so that the areas of the surroundings through which the processions pass are "controlled".

There are also plainclothes agents to prevent thefts and street vendors, the issues that can "give up" the most in the most touristy areas of Madrid, and entertainment venues are controlled so as not to exceed the noise limits, as well as access to the city ​​so that there are no "complications". Road safety is especially important, Sanz has stressed, for which reason alcohol and drug controls will be "reinforced".
